Preserving Cultural Memory

The Alaska Native Heritage Center maintains collections of Alaska Native cultural objects, archival materials, oral histories, and documentary resources — stewarded according to Alaska Native values of respect, relationship, and community benefit.

ANHC supports research that honors Alaska Native cultural sovereignty — prioritizing community-led inquiry, collaborative partnerships, and the return of cultural knowledge to the communities from which it came.

For research access, partnerships, or inquiries about specific cultural materials, contact us directly. We work with researchers, documentarians, educators, and tribal governments.

Research Principles

Community-Centered Research

Community Sovereignty

Alaska Native communities own their cultural knowledge. Research at ANHC respects and upholds indigenous data sovereignty.

Benefit to Communities

We prioritize research that directly benefits Alaska Native communities — not extractive scholarship for outside institutions.

Collaborative Process

Research partnerships involve Alaska Native scholars, Elders, and community representatives from the outset.

NAGPRA Compliance

ANHC adheres strictly to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act for all applicable cultural items.
